As a luxury custom home builder, I have almost always built master bedrooms on the first floor of a new home, when square footage allows. Now, especially with the population getting older, almost everyone wants a first floor master bedroom, and the reasons and benefits are plentiful, as I’ve always known.
Maturing home owners enjoy having the most important rooms of their home downstairs, including their master bedroom. Bad knees or bad backs make walking upstairs a chore, or even a literal pain. Even younger luxury custom home owners are building with the future in mind, with downstairs master bedrooms. Of course, for the disabled, or those with certain illnesses, a downstairs master suite is a necessity rather than an option.
In some cases, parents of babies and toddlers choose to sleep in an upstairs bedroom close to the children until the little ones get a little older, then the parents move to the first floor master suite. In this case, the downstairs master bedroom is often temporarily employed as a playroom, conveniently close to all the other living areas on the first floor.
Parents with teenagers, or parents with visiting young adult children, enjoy having their bedrooms on a completely different floor, and I am pretty sure the teenagers like this as well! It gives everyone a bit more privacy, and gives the parents some peace and quiet.
I am seeing a trend in multi-generational living, with three generations living under one roof. With this type of family dynamic, a guest bedroom on the first floor, if your lot size allows, is ideal. Even if your senior parents don’t live with you, it’s more than convenient to have a bedroom on the first floor for when they visit.
