Storing Wines in Your Wine Room

Choosing and buying wines is only half of the process, they also need to be stored properly so they increase in quality and value. Wines can last for decades and even centuries when stored correctly.

Below are 5 Tips for Storing Wine at Home Correctly. They are:

  1. Storing Wine - at the proper temperature is the most important detail. 55 degrees is a good average but some wines may vary.
  2. Store Wine - horizontally for bottles with corks. The cork needs to stay moist. It also provides maximum space and easy access in your wine room or cellar.
  3. Protect Wine - from light and vibrations in your home. Vibrations like loud stereos and the washers and dryers in laundry rooms can cause disruptions in the sediments in the bottle - and can cause the wine not to age favorably.
  4. Store Wine - at the proper Humidity. In general, your wine room or wine cellar should be between 60-68% humidity.
  5. Open Wine - and store it correctly. Stored wine can last 3-5 days. Cork it immediately after enjoying a glass or two - by covering the cork with a little wax paper and it will slide into the bottle snuggly. Be sure and serve your wine at the right temperature. This ensures the full expression of the wine and its aroma.
    • Red wine should be chilled slightly below room temperature - between 58-65 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • White wines should be chilled cooler between 45-55 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Champagne should be served the coldest of all - between 38-45 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wine Pairings with Food

Wine pairing with food invites a large spectrum of approaches. At one end is “I drink what I like and eat what I like”. The other end is a search for the ultimate pairing, where every nuance of vintage, flavor, body, acidity, tannin, and oak treatment is scrutinized versus the weight, acidity, and flavor of the meal. Learn to pair wines and foods with confidence - plus exploring the world of wine can be fun and an entertaining discovery process. Drinking the wine that you like - is the first step to becoming a wine expert.
